Abstract
Objective: This paper is written with the aim of analyzing behavior change methods derived from the narratives of Imam Ali (a.s.) and evaluating their applicability to contemporary psychological challenges, including digital addiction, social anxiety, pandemic related stress, and modern depressive disorders.
Method: Using a descriptive analytical approach and library based data collection, this study systematically examines the narratives of Imam Ali (a.s.) available in Nahj al Balagha, Ghurar al Hikam, and other primary sources. These methods are compared with established approaches in contemporary psychology, including exposure therapy, cognitive restructuring, anger management, self
monitoring, modeling, and differential reinforcement.
Findings: The analysis reveals seven distinct behavior change methods in the teachings of Imam Ali (a.s.): flooding for the treatment of phobias, stress management through cognitive restructuring, avoidance techniques for depression, anger management through forbearance (hilm) and silence (samt), self evaluation (muhasabah) for behavioral self
monitoring, symbolic modeling through exemplary figures, and differential reinforcement through vicarious rewards. Each method shows a significant alignment with evidence
based psychological interventions while offering a unique integration of spirituality and cognition.
Results: The narratives of Imam Ali (a.s.) provide comprehensive and empirically validated approaches for behavior change that address contemporary mental health challenges. These methods emphasize cognitive awareness, self regulation, and social learning, making them highly relevant, especially for modern psychological functioning, particularly in culturally integrated therapeutic contexts
